Following recent performances of Beethovens Fifth Symphony and Schumanns Konzertstck, Islington Sinfonia return with a programme that brings together French refinement, Classical balance and Romantic energy.
The concert opens with Le Tombeau de Couperin, Maurice Ravels orchestral suite based on his piano work written during the First World War. Elegant and clear in its writing, the piece offers a reflective opening to the evening.
At the centre of the programme is Sinfonia Concertante by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, one of his most finely balanced works for solo instruments and orchestra. Part concerto and part symphony, it places the violin and viola in close dialogue. The solo parts are performed by Tim Chua (violin) and Adam Maha (viola).
The concert concludes with Symphony No. 4 Italian, Felix Mendelssohns Fourth Symphony. Written after his travels in Italy, the work is notable for its rhythmic drive and clarity of orchestral writing, culminating in a fast-paced final movement.
