In ‘The Owl and the Nightingale’, an unnamed narrator overhears a fierce disagreement between the two birds, which moves from the eloquent and philosophical to the ribald, risqué and ridiculous. A new version of the poem, published in 2021 by Simon Armitage, is brought to life in this special staging, with the author narrating and actors playing the owl and nightingale. This performance includes evocative music by Couperin, Bach, Watkins, Vasks and Vivaldi, performed by City of London Sinfonia. Touching on themes like competition, the importance of beauty and how we make a contribution to society, ‘The Owl and the Nightingale’ is as relevant today as when it was first written. Presented by City of London Sinfonia in association with Faber Members.
