Ma Bessie's Prohibition party

Bessie Smith, nicknamed the “Empress of the Blues” was one of the most popular American female blues singers in the 1920s and 1930s. She is often regarded as one of the greatest singers of her era and was a major influence on fellow blues singers as well as jazz vocalists. Tragically, her performing career was cut short when she was killed in a car accident in 1937 at the age of just 43. MA BESSIE and her PIGFOOT BAND take us on a trip back to prohibition-era America, bringing us the very best of the period’s blues and jazz, with a brilliant homage to the Empress of Blues herself. Julia Titus, as Ma Bessie, treats us to a host of blues standards as well as many of her own compositions all perfectly in tune with the music of the time.
