Free Lunchtime Concert: Giulia Contaldo, piano

Italian-American pianist Giulia Contaldo took part in the Leeds International Piano Competition in 2021 and in early 2022 she performed Schumann’s Piano Concerto with the BBC Philharmonic at the Bridgewater Hall, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. Respighi’s evocative and beautiful Nocturne is followed by Schumann’s Fantasiestücke – eight contrasting pieces, some fiery and dramatic, some lyrical and intimate. Albéniz’s Iberia is a set of musical postcards of Spanish places and scenes, and contains some of the most challenging piano music ever written! The programme closes with Liszt’s transcription of the sublime Liebestod from Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde.
