Musicke in the Ayre begin their 2024 season at St Mary the Virgin, Bathwick, with a 17th century tale of two cities: London and Venice The 17th century saw major changes in musical styles across Europe. Mezzo Alice Simmons joins Din Ghani in sampling works for voice and lute during this period at two opposite ends of the continent – both major centres of musical development. Songs by John Dowland, Robert Johnson and Henry Purcell represent London’s contribution, while from Venice they’ll look at Monteverdi, Francesco Cavalli and Barbara Strozzi.
