Berlioz - Roman Carnival Overture Prokofiev - Violin Concerto no.1 Tchaikovsky - Symphony no.4

Mayumi Kanagawa, who thrilled us on her first visit in 2021, returns to play Prokofiev’s magical 1st Violin Concerto. Sophisticated and lyrical, it has the overall feel of a musical fairy-tale. Berlioz’s Overture, Roman Carnival starts our proceedings with an unstoppable surge of energy, while Tchaikovsky inhabits diverse emotional worlds in his powerful 4th Symphony. He wrote of “Fate, which prevents our pursuit of happiness” - but then, of the brilliant finale, “Go out among the people. They know how to rejoice”.
