Madame Arcati is a medium who is invited one evening by the Condomines to their house in Kent.

Mr. Charles Condomine is a novelist who doesn’t believe in the supernatural but simply wishes to use the evening’s events as subject material for a new book. Events take an unexpected turn when the supposed charlatan really does summon a presence from the other side.
