Orphaned Kurdish children drug horses to smuggle goods across the Iran/Iraq border in an attempt to survive and keep their war-torn family together. A Time for Drunken Horses tells the story of orphaned Kurdish children struggling to on the Iran-Iraq border. Despite its war-torn and violent context, it is not a film about war or politics, but about a people spread out and divided over the years by wars, genocides and rebellions. A Time for Drunken Horses showcases the difficulties of living in such a place – the loss of parents, the disintegration of childhood and innocence, the need to intoxicate horses to make them carry loads through the harsh landscape and across the border. It’s a challenging film to watch, but viewers will be rewarded by the stunning winterscapes and compelling performances.
