This paper explores the longevity of medievalism, its uses of the medieval and Viking age, in Norway after 1814.

The paper aims to outline the overarching trends of medievalism in nineteenth-, twentieth- and twenty-first-century Norway before looking at three examples of this medievalism.

By examining the 1872 national millennium jubilee, the 1934 NS-rally at Stiklestad, and the proliferation of Viking experience centres in the 21st century, this paper will comment on the changing nuances in Norway’s relationship with its Viking past.

Karl Christian Alvestad is an associate professor at the University of South-Eastern Norway.
